Turbulence

It's been almost 5 months since my last newsletter, so sorry for the slight delay. Last summer I started a project that has kept me both busy and excited. And once you lose the rhythm, the habit, it's hard to sit down and write again. And if you add to that the bad news about the climate emergency, the genocide in Palestine, the looming U.S. elections... it's hard to find motivation.  We are less than 45 days into the new year and it already anticipates turmoil. I find it rather ironic that in the midst of a harsh and complex reality, full of urgencies, the best solution we can find is to sell people glasses so that they are connected to screens all day long and alienated from reality. A New York Times journalist tried them and said that the resolution of the different windows in the viewer is excellent, however, the "physical" reality looks blurred, pixelated. Dystopian and telling of our times. 

The news on the climate emergency is devastating, wherever you look. 2023 was the hottest year on record. In 2024, Canada is having a warm, dry winter, with lack of snow and freezing temperatures that disconnects communities that rely on ice roads (a network of more than 8,000 kilometers across the country). Toronto had the warmest winter day on record, reaching 11 °C on February 9^th.  In Spain, the drought in Barcelona and surrounding areas is so dramatic that there is even talk of bringing water from Valencia by boat. In Mexico City, the system that supplies most of the city is at historic lows and it is expected that in 140 days there will be no more water available. The situation is worrying, but I am more concerned about the response of the authorities and society. Instead of proposing solutions that move us in the direction of more sustainable models conducive to life, the speeches only talk about patches that allow us to maintain our unsustainable economic and development systems.  In the case of Spain, outdated narratives lacking technical rigor are rescued, such as the Ebro water transfer or the folkloric transport of water by boat. In Mexico, the government is promoting the drilling of more wells and infrastructure that will continue to empty natural reserves and encourage irrational use in an out-of-control city. Only a few voices rise above the noise to tell us about real strategies such as limiting consumption for large consumers (industries, macro-farms, hotel complexes, etc), promoting water reuse and rainwater harvesting. We should talk about reducing demand and adapting it to planetary limits before talking about increasing supply. This is basic. In Canada... what to say about the only G7 country that has not reduced its emissions since 1990. It seems that Canada's commitment to climate change is as superfluous as its reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.  Museums and institutions were quick to cancel artists and fire or force out Indigenous representatives when they publicly showed their support for an Indigenous (and primarily humanitarian) cause such as the cessation of Israel's genocide in Gaza.

Japanese culture has a concept to refer to the mental, physical and temporal space that a person gives itself in their daily life. Perhaps you decide to arrive 10 minutes early for an appointment so that you have time to wander a bit and ground yourself before the meeting or you give yourself time to savor that magical emotion you feel after reading a good text, listening to a song or watching a movie that touches you. That looseness, spaciousness or in-between is called Yutori.  With or without virtual reality goggles, Yutori is a difficult thing to do in Western culture. Not only there is no time for reflection after or around everyday events, but the experience itself has already been colonized and modified by how it is going to be published.  It is not enough to post videos of the concert right after it ends, but we prefer to watch it through the tiny screen of our phone to share it in real time. I pledge here my commitment to reset my Yutori to the usual two weeks. Let's hope so.

Han pasado casi 5 meses desde mi último boletín, así que perdón por el ligero retraso. El verano pasado comenzó un proyecto que me ha mantenido tan ocupado como ilusionado. Y una vez que pierdes el ritmo, el hábito, cuesta volverse a sentar y escribir. Y si le sumas las malas noticias en materia de emergencia climática, el genocidio en Palestina, la que se avecina en las elecciones de Estados Unidos…  cuesta encontrar motivación.  Llevamos menos de 45 días del nuevo año y ya se anticipa revuelto. Encuentro bastante irónico que en medio de una realidad dura y compleja, llena de urgencias, la mejor solución que podemos encontrar es vender a las personas unas gafas para que estén todo el día conectadas a pantallas y alienadas de la realidad. Un periodista del New York Times las probó y decía que la resolución de las distintas ventanas en el visor es excelente, sin embargo, la realidad “física” se ve borrosa, pixelada. Distópico e ilustrativo de nuestros tiempos. 

Las noticias en materia de la emergencia climática son devastadoras, mires donde mires. El 2023 fue el año más caliente desde que hay registros. En 2024, Canadá está teniendo un invierno cálido y seco, donde la falta de nieve y temperaturas gélidas desconectan a comunidades que dependen de carreteras de hielo (una red de más de 8000 kilómetros en todo el país). Toronto batió el récord del día más cálido de invierno desde que hay registros, alcanzando 11 °C el 9 de febrero.  En España, la sequía en Barcelona y alrededores es tan dramática que incluso se habla de llevar agua desde Valencia en barco. En la Ciudad de México, el sistema que abastece a la mayor parte de la ciudad se encuentra en mínimos históricos y se anticipa que en 140 días deje de haber agua disponible. Preocupa la situación, pero más me preocupa la respuesta de las autoridades y la sociedad. En lugar de proponer soluciones que nos hagan mover en dirección hacia modelos más sostenibles y conducentes a la vida, los discursos sólo hablan de parches que nos permitan mantener nuestros sistemas económicos y de desarrollo insostenibles.  En el caso de España se rescatan narrativas caducas y carentes de rigor técnico como el trasvase del Ebro o el folclórico transporte de agua en barco. En México el gobierno impulsa la perforación de más pozos e infraestructura que siga vaciando las reservas naturales y fomentando el uso irracional en una ciudad fuera de control. Sólo algunas voces sobresalen del ruido para hablarnos de estrategias reales como la limitación del consumo para grandes consumidores (industrias, macrogranjas, complejos hoteleros, etc), el impulso de la reutilización de agua y la captación de agua de lluvia. Conviene hablar de reducir la demanda y adaptarla a los límites planetarios antes de hablar de aumentar la oferta. Es básico.  En Canadá… para qué hablar del único país del G7 que no ha reducido sus emisiones desde 1990. Parece que el compromiso de Canadá con el cambio climático es tan superfluo como el de su reconciliación con pueblos Indígenas.  Museos e instituciones tardaron poco en cancelar a artistas y despedir o forzar la salida de representantes Indígenas cuando estas personas mostraron públicamente su apoyo a una causa indígena (y ante todo humanitaria) como el cese del genocidio en Gaza por parte de Israel.

La cultura japonesa tiene un concepto para referirse al espacio mental, físico y temporal que una persona se da a sí misma en su vida diaria. Quizás decides llegar 10 minutos temprano a una cita para así tener tiempo de divagar un poco y hacer tierra antes del encuentro o te das tiempo para saborear esa emoción mágica que sientes tras leer un buen texto, escuchar una canción o ver una película que te toca. A esa holgura, amplitud o esparcimiento le llaman Yutori.  Con o sin gafas de realidad virtual, el Yutori se antoja algo difícil en la cultura occidental. No es que no haya tiempo para la reflexión tras o alrededor de los eventos cotidianos, sino que la misma experiencia ya ha sido colonizada y modificada por el cómo va a ser publicada.  No es suficiente subir vídeos del concierto a las redes sociales justo al acabar, sino que preferimos verlo a través de la diminuta pantalla de nuestro teléfono con tal de compartirlo en tiempo real. Manifiesto mi compromiso de reajustar mi Yutori a las habituales dos semanas. Esperemos así sea.
