Scarcity

When I finished my bachelor in 2008, the financial crisis was hitting hard everywhere, particularly in Spain. Unemployment rates were off the roof and the message was clear- there are no jobs for everybody, so if you do find one, hold on to it, whatever it takes. Personal development? Career paths? Joy? You had to be out of this world to even consider any of that, just be grateful to be employed. Time passed and I found myself in Toronto, a thriving economy in one of the fastest growing cities in North America. Plenty of jobs and career alternatives, however not that many with proper vacation, benefits and pension plan. If you manage to get one of those, hold on to it. Even if it means long commute, lack of meaning or toxic office culture. Housing? There are not enough homes for everybody in Toronto, so go find an apartment, even underground or with an awful landlord, and do not leave, otherwise the yearly rent increase will eat your salary. And if you are thinking of buying, go buy now, as soon as possible, wherever it is, even if you do not like the neighbourhood or do not love the house- just do it, and now, because it will only get worst. With the Russian invasion of Ukraine and its forecasted impacts on global energy and food supply, some Spanish supermarkets are having trouble to keep up with customers’ demand. In a 2020 déjà vu, some people are rushing to the grocery stores to stock up on toilet paper and sunflower oil.

The scarcity mindset is back, or maybe it never went away.  That is obviously privileged scarcity, in the so-called developed world (whatever that means), and it will absolutely sound like a joke to anyone experiencing real life struggles. And that makes it even more remarkable to me. So many of us are driven, consciously or unconsciously, by the thought that there is not enough of anything in this world, and we must come to terms with whatever we are offered and hold on to it, because it can only be worst.  And that leads to fear, competition, anxiety, stress and discomfort. Life as a race instead of life as a journey. Fear-based decision making.  But wealth and resources are not dissipating, they are just leaking.  Kind of a gas leak, as money is going from the bottom of society to the top 1%.  Every time you have a hard time finding a kindergarten for your children, wait for too long for that bus to arrive or cannot afford a house, just think that the richest person in the world is worth 21 times as much as the richest person 40 years ago, while the average worker is earning less that he or she made then.  It is not scarcity, it is inequality.  And yoga, self-care and daily meditation will not stop the leak.

In an unexpected plot twist, this global turmoil could also lead to some very well needed climate action. Europe has just launched a strategy to accelerate the investment in renewable energy to reduce their dependency on Russian gas, the rising cost of oil in North America is making people rethink their transportation choices, countries around the world will need to find sustainable ways to increase the fertility of the soils to maintain crop production- which currently relies on (surprise surprise) gas-based fertilizers. It is very sad that a war had to happen to trigger these actions. It may also be time to tackle the scarcity of relationships, with each other and the land, and make room for an emerging paradigm, healing, diverse and abundant.

Sherry (Colorado): This article is a very refreshing reminder that we are meant to be stewards of the land and not see ourselves as always causing destruction. Indeed that had happened, and to see ourselves as the powerful partners to the land definitely feels more empowering than letting it recover in a vacuum- as long as we’re fully aware of benefits to the land vs detriments. Escasez

Cuando acabé la carrera de obras públicas era 2008 y la crisis financiera estaba golpeando todo el mundo, particularmente España. La tasa de desempleo estaba por las nubes y el mensaje era claro- no hay trabajos para todas, así que, si encuentras uno, agárrate a él y no lo sueltes. ¿Desarrollo personal? ¿Carrera profesional? ¿Alegría? Tendrías que estar loca para pensar en nada de eso, sólo da gracias por tener un empleo. El tiempo pasó y llegué a Toronto, una economía boyante en una de las ciudades con más rápido crecimiento de todo norte américa. Muchos trabajos y alternativas, sin embargo no tantos con buenas vacaciones, plan de pensiones y condiciones favorables. Si consigues uno de esos trabajos, más vale que lo mantengas. Sea como sea, incluso si tardas hora y media en llegar a la oficina, no te gusta o el ambiente de trabajo es tóxico. ¿Vivienda? No hay casas para todas en Toronto, así que encuentra un apartamento, incluso en un sótano o con una casera pésima, y no lo dejes porque si te cambias el incremento del precio del alquiler se va a comer tus ahorros. Y si estás pensando en comprar, hazlo de una vez, tan pronto como puedas, donde sea, incluso si no te gusta el barrio o la casa, sólo compra, y ya, porque la situación sólo va a ponerse peor. Con la invasión rusa de Ucrania y sus impactos anticipados en los mercados de producción de energía y alimentos, algunos supermercados españoles están teniendo dificultad en dar abasto a la demanda de algunos productos. En un déjà vu de 2020, algunas personas están corriendo a los supermercados a comprar papel higiénico y aceite de girasol.

La mentalidad de la escasez está de vuelta, o quizás nunca se fue. Mis ejemplos son de una escasez privilegiada, en eso que llamamos el mundo desarrollado (lo que sea que eso signifique), y parecerán un chiste a cualquier persona que sufre problemas de verdad. Y eso es lo que lo hace más relevante para mí.  Muchas de nuestras vidas están conducidas, de manera consciente o inconsciente, por el pensamiento de que no hay suficiente en este mundo, y que tenemos que resignarnos con lo que se nos ofrece, y no soltarlo, porque sólo se va a poner peor. Y eso nos lleva a miedo, competición, ansiedad, estrés e intranquilidad. La vida como una carrera en lugar de la vida como un viaje. Las decisiones basadas en el miedo. Pero la riqueza y los recursos no están desapareciendo, sólo se están fugando. Es como una fuga de gas, en la cual el dinero de las clases bajas de la sociedad se está yendo hacia arriba, al 1%. Cada vez que tienes dificultad para encontrar una guardería, esperas demasiado a que llegue el autobús o no puedes acceder a vivienda digna, sólo piensa que la persona más rica del mundo acumula una riqueza igual a 21 veces la de la persona más rica hace 40 años, mientras que la persona trabajadora media está ganando menos que entonces. No es escasez, es desigualdad. Y el yoga, el cuidado personal y la meditación no van a parar la fuga.  

En un giro de guion no esperado, la agitación global puede que desemboque en acciones contra la crisis climática. Europa acaba de anunciar su estrategia para acelerar la inversión en energías renovables y así reducir su dependencia del gas ruso, el incremento del coste del combustible en norte américa está haciendo que la gente se replantee su forma de transporte, países alrededor del mundo tendrán que encontrar formas sostenibles de incrementar la fertilidad de sus suelos para mantener las cosechas- que actualmente dependen de (sorpresa sorpresa) fertilizantes derivados del gas. Es muy triste que tenga que venir una guerra para provocar estas acciones. Quizás también sea el tiempo de atajar la escasez de relaciones, con nuestras semejantes y la tierra, y hacer espacio para un nuevo modelo, uno que sane, que sea colectivo, diverso y abundante.

Sherry (Colorado): El artículo es un recordatorio de que estamos destinados a ser protectores de la tierra y no vernos siempre como destructores. Claro que la destrucción ha pasado, y vernos como alianzas poderosas con la tierra te hace sentir más empoderada que dejar que se recupere en un vacío. Eso siempre que estemos conscientes de los beneficios sobre la tierra y de los perjuicios.
