Otherness

It is relatively easy to estimate and measure how much water flows in a river, however, it is something else to do so with groundwater. When water flows in between rocks, roots and soil particles, things get more complicated. It moves more slowly and less predictably. It does not help it cannot be seen either. When the iron curtain collapsed in 1991, academics in the western world found out that their Russian colleagues have arrived at similar equations to describe groundwater flow.  Who knows what could have happened having had the chance to collaborate instead of working in isolation?

This is the fourth newsletter since the war in Ukraine started. Things are messy, complex and cruel, and I do not even pretend I can make any sense of it. However, I am not sure that blocking all the Russian news outlets and further isolating its citizens (not talking about oligarchs here) is of any help. Even in pre-invasion times, the mainstream/western newspapers barely provided any Russian news or cultural exchange beyond the usual note about Putin.  I only know three people who have visited Russia: my uncle Jose, my friend Charly (who even learned Russian) and my fellow newsletter author Jasper. How can we build empathy if we do not even see each other reflected on love stories, landscapes, songs or food?

The alienation of other cultures is another step in a trajectory that started with our self-claimed separation from other forms of life in this planet. Some experts trace it back to agriculture and domestication of cattle, about 10,000 years ago. When humans started to manipulate ecosystems, create surplus and build more permanent communities, other forms of life gradually started to move to the background.  This trend was boosted by Plato’s Theory of Forms (or Theory of Ideas) about 2,400 years ago- his distinction between the material (sensorial and imperfect) world and the ideal (rational) world set humans apart from any other living beings and reinforced our superiority as rational beings.

This is so ingrained in our belief system that we barely think about it. I remember when 15 years ago, in a civil engineering class about construction methodologies, a professor was telling us about the impacts of mega-projects. When asked about how to deal with endangered species, he claimed that for him humankind was at the top of the world hierarchy and providing resources for humans justified anything. This man was an example of the successful engineer. He worked in an international engineering firm, always very busy, suited up, drove a porsche to class. Those words stayed with me for the rest of my life, although I did not full grasp what they implied and the worldview they represented until recently. They showed that he did not understand that we are nature, we are part of the interconnected network of life composed by birds, snakes, rivers, rocks, mountains, bears, lakes, valleys, oceans, worms…. Everything. There is no pyramid on which we sit at the top, there is only a complex network in which when one element suffers or disappears, we all become weaker and eventually disappear.  I would love to talk to this professor and hear how he feels about that statement now, knowing what we know, and seeing what we see.

When I was 8 years old, I attended a 10-day soccer summer camp in the Pyrenees, northern Spain. We had a day when all the parents would come see the beautiful facilities and spend time with their children. My parents brought me and some friends to a beautiful monastery located near a town called Graus. I did not know then, but it was a Buddhist monastery. I recall being amazed by the breathtaking views and interesting architecture. While our parents chatted, we kids went to play somewhere near a fountain. As soon as we started playing, a bunch of wasps interrupted our game. We were quite scared. I do not recall exactly but I think I proposed something like killing the wasps so we could continue playing. At that moment a bald man in an orange rag came out and approached me. He kindly whispered “Do not kill the wasps, they are just beings, like you and me”. I was in completely shock, not only because of his words and his soft voice- it was the first time I saw someone like him. His words also stayed with me for the rest of my life. Now, I wish I could put him in touch with my engineering professor.

In the past I have been a cloud, a river, and the air. And I was a rock. I was the minerals in the water. This is not a question of belief in reincarnation. This is the history of life on Earth. Es relativamente sencillo estimar y medir cuánta agua fluye en un río, sin embargo, es bastante más complicado el hacerlo con el agua subterránea. Cuando el agua fluye a través de las rocas, raíces y partículas de suelo, las cosas se complican. Se mueve de forma más lenta y errática. Tampoco ayuda que no la podemos ver. Cuando el telón de acero cayó en 1991, académicas del mundo occidental se dieron cuenta de que sus colegas rusas habían llegado a ecuaciones similares para describir el flujo de agua subterránea. Quién sabe qué podría haber pasado si hubieran tenido la oportunidad de colaborar en lugar de trabajar en aislamiento.

Este es el cuarto boletín desde que empezó la guerra en Ucrania. Es un tema complicado y cruel, y no voy a fingir que puedo analizarlo o sacar conclusiones. Sin embargo, no estoy seguro de que bloquear todos los medios de comunicación rusos y aislar todavía más a su ciudadanía (no me refiero a sus oligarcas) sea de ayuda. Incluso en los tiempos anteriores a la invasión, los periódicos occidentales apenas cubrían noticias o compartían notas culturales más allá del típico artículo sobre Putin. Sólo conozco a tres personas que han visitado Rusia: mi tío José, mi amigo Charly (que incluso aprendió ruso) y mi colega de boletines Jasper.  ¿Cómo podemos crear empatía si ni siquiera nos vemos reflejados en historias de amor, paisajes, canciones o comidas?

La alienación de otras culturas es otro paso en una trayectoria que empezó con nuestra auto proclamación de separación de otras formas de vida en este planeta. Algunas expertas dicen que se remonta a la aparición de la agricultura y la domesticación del ganado, hace unos 10.000 años. Cuando los humanos comenzamos a manipular los ecosistemas, creamos excedentes y construimos comunidades más permanentes, otras formas de vida comenzaron a pasar gradualmente a un segundo plano. Esta tendencia se reforzó con la Teoría de las Ideas de Platón, hace unos 2.400 años- su distinción entre el mundo material (sensorial e imperfecto) y el mundo de las ideas (racional) nos separó de otros seres vivos y reforzó nuestra superioridad como seres racionales.

Esta idea está tan incrustada en nuestro sistema de valores que apenas nos damos cuenta. Recuerdo que hace 15 años, en una clase de ingeniería civil sobre métodos de construcción, el profesor nos estaba contando acerca de los impactos de los megaproyectos. Cuando le preguntaron acerca de qué hacer con especies amenazadas, respondió que para él los humanos son más importante que cualquier otra cosa y que abastecer de recursos a la humanidad lo justifica todo. Este señor era el ejemplo del ingeniero exitoso: trabajaba en una consultora internacional, siempre ocupado, siempre trajeado, llegaba en porsche a clase. Sus palabras se quedaron en mi mente para el resto de mi vida, aunque realmente no llegué a entender lo que significaban y la visión del mundo que representaban hasta hace poco. Esas palabras mostraban que él no entendía que somos la naturaleza, parte de una red de vida interconectada compuesta por pájaros, serpientes, ríos, rocas, montañas, osos, lagos, valles, océanos, gusanos… Todo. No existe pirámide en la que el ser humano se sienta arriba en el vértice, sólo existe una compleja red en la que, si un elemento sufre o desaparece, todos los demás se debilitan y finalmente desaparecen. Me encantaría hablar con ese profesor y escuchar cómo se siente él acerca de esa opinión ahora, sabiendo lo que sabemos, viendo lo que vemos.

Cuando tenía 8 años asistí a un campamento de verano en los Pirineos, en el norte de España. 10 días jugando al fútbol en un lugar precioso. Había un día en el que nuestras familias venían a visitar las instalaciones y pasar tiempo con los hijos. Mis padres me llevaron, junto con unos amigos, a un monasterio espectacular que estaba cerca de un pueblo llamado Graus. No lo sabía entonces, pero era un monasterio budista. Recuerdo estar impresionado por las vistas y la arquitectura. Mientras nuestros padres y madres charlaban, nosotros nos fuimos a jugar cerca de una fuente.  Tan pronto como comenzamos a jugar, unas avispas nos interrumpieron. Estábamos asustados y, aunque no lo recuerdo exactamente, creo que propuse algo así como matar las avispas para poder seguir jugando. En ese justo momento, un hombre calvo en una túnica naranja salió del templo y se me acercó.  Con amabilidad me susurró “no mates a las avispas, son sólo seres vivos, como tú y como yo”. Estaba completamente en shock, no sólo por sus palabras y su voz suave- era la primera vez que veía a alguien como él. Sus palabras también se quedaron conmigo para el resto de mi vida. Ahora pienso que ojalá pudiera ponerlo en contacto con mi profesor de ingeniería.

En el pasado he sido una nube, un río, y el aire.  Y fui una roca. Fui los minerales en el agua. Esto no es una cuestión de creer en la reencarnación. Esta es la historia de la vida en la Tierra.
