Teníamos un mundo/ We had a world

Metafóricamente          

La semana pasada leí un artículo sobre la reciente ola de calor en India que me conmovió. Hospitales llenos de gente con problemas respiratorios y golpes de calor, casas calientes como un horno a pesar de tener aire acondicionado (los aparatos no daban abasto a esas temperaturas), cultivos arrasados por la falta de agua y gente capaz de cosecharlos en esas condiciones… La cantidad y calidad de los detalles me hizo sentir que estaba allí y me recordó que la situación en Europa y otras partes del mundo no está lejos de eso. Sin embargo puede ser que a otras personas ese tipo de narración, realista y dura, les haga desmotivarse y perder interés.  Demasiados problemas en el mundo, además de los que hay en cada casa. Resulta abrumador.

Acaba de fallecer James Lovelock, creador de la hipótesis de Gaia en los años setenta. Esta teoría considera a la Tierra como un sistema complejo y autoregulado que crea y mantiene las condiciones para la vida en ella. La madre Tierra como un super-organismo, un concepto potente. A pesar de las críticas de algunos sectores de la ciencia, la hipótesis de Gaia contribuyó a reconocer la interconexión de ecosistemas, seres vivos e inertes.  Las metáforas, si bien imperfectas y a veces incluso simplistas, sirven para aterrizar conceptos que de otra forma se vuelven abstractos y poco atractivos. El uso del invernadero para explicar el calentamiento global por la emisión de gases a la atmósfera es otro ejemplo. Cualquier persona puede imaginarlo. Aún así conviene tener una visión crítica con las metáforas, ya que pueden limitar nuestro entendimiento del problema, incluso de las soluciones. Hay quien dice que el invernadero no has dejado a todas un poco indefensas, puesto que parece que no hay forma de salir de esa caja de cristal. Ese símil deja afuera la capacidad del planeta (incluyendo al ser humano) de capturar carbono de la atmósfera. Quizás deberíamos hablar de un invernadero con ventanas. Cada vez que plantamos un árbol o que regeneramos un humedal estamos abriendo una ventana y dejando que un soplo de aire fresco entre.

Algunos grupos indígenas conocen Norte América como la Isla Tortuga. Los mitos de creación varían entre las naciones, pero para los Haudenosaunee (indígenas que vivieron y viven entre otros lugares en lo que ahora conocemos como estado de Nueva York, en Estados Unidos, y las provincias de Ontario y Quebec, en Canadá) una mujer embarazada se precipitó hacia la Tierra desde el Mundo Cielo. Los pájaros, viéndola caer desde el cielo, la ayudaron a aterrizar de forma segura sobre el caparazón de una tortuga. El resto de los animales le trajeron tierra del fondo del agua, poniéndola también sobre el caparazón y dando lugar a un nuevo territorio lleno de vida para la mujer y sus descendientes. Además de ser un mito de gran belleza, la creación de Isla Tortuga, al igual que Gaia, describe al ser humano como parte de la naturaleza, en dependencia y coexistencia con el resto de los seres.

A diferencia de la ciencia, el arte entiende y se basa en el poder de lo no directo, lo sugestivo- la imagen, la metáfora, el mensaje entre líneas, lo subjetivo.  El director de cine Stanley Kubric decía: “Si quieres comunicar algo de verdad, ya sea una emoción o una actitud, o aún más si es una idea, la forma menos efectiva y agradable de hacerlo es directamente. Sin embargo, si eres capaz de llevar a la gente a un punto en el que tienen que pensar a dónde estás dirigiéndote con tu argumento, y luego lo descubren por sí mismos, la emoción del descubrimiento va directa al corazón”.

Probablemente necesitemos a Greta Thunberg gritándonos a la cara que el planeta está en llamas tanto como a Lucrecia Martel susurrando que teníamos un mundo y acabamos conformándonos con cuatro paredes.

Metaphorically

Last week I was moved by an article about the most recent heat wave in India. Hospitals flooded with people affected by heat strokes and respiratory issues, homes as hot as an oven despite having AC (the machines could not keep up with the heat), devastated crops due to a lack of water and workers able to work in those conditions… The quality and quantity of the details made me feel I was there and reminded me of the situation in Europe and other parts of the world. But it could be that other people are turned off by this type of narration, realist and harsh. There are too many problems in the world, on top of our own problems at home. It is overwhelming.

James Lovelock, creator of the Gaia hypothesis in the seventies, just died. This theory considers Earth as a complex and self-regulated system that creates and maintains the conditions for life within itself. Mother Earth as a super-organism; quite cool and powerful. Despite the criticism by some scientists, the Gaia hypothesis helped raise awareness about the interconnectedness of ecosystems, living beings and matter. Metaphors, although imperfect and sometimes even simplistic, allow us to ground concepts otherwise abstract and unappealing. The use of the greenhouse to explain global warming due to gas emissions is another example. Everybody can picture it. However, we should keep a critical eye on metaphors as they can limit our understanding of the problem, even of the solutions. Some argue that the greenhouse has left us a bit helpless because it seems that there is no way to escape from that glass box. That metaphor does not incorporate the planet’s (including humankind’s) capacity to capture and store carbon from the atmosphere. Maybe we should talk about a greenhouse with windows. Every time we plant a tree or restore a wetland, we open a window, allowing some fresh air to flow in.

For some First Nations North America is known as Turtle Island. Their origin stories vary across nations but for the Haudenosaunee (indigenous peoples that lived and live in places known now as New York state in USA, and Ontario and Quebec in Canada, just to name a few) a pregnant woman fell from Sky World to Earth. The birds saw her falling through the sky and helped her land safely on top of a turtle’s back. The rest of the animals brought her mud from the bottom of the water, placing it on the turtle’s back and creating a new territory full of life for the woman and all her descendants. Not only a beautiful story, the creation of Turtle Island, same as Gaia, describes humankind as part of Nature, in interdependence and coexistence with all beings.

Unlike science, art understands and is based on the power of the indirect, the suggestive- images, metaphors, the message in between the lines, the subjective. Stanley Kubric, the filmmaker, once said: “If you really want to communicate something, even if it’s just an emotion or an attitude, let alone an idea, the least effective and least enjoyable way is directly. But if you can get people to the point where they have to think a moment what it is you’re getting at, and then discover it, the thrill of discovery goes right through the heart”.

We probable need Greta Thunberg yelling right at our face that the planet is in flames as much as a we need Lucrecia Martel whispering that we had a world and ended up settling for four walls.
