Aprendiendo en un mundo cambiante/ Learning in an ever-changing world

Un compañero de la universidad me contó que su hija va a estudiar la misma carrera en el mismo lugar en el que nosotros estudiamos. Lo primero que me hizo pensar fue que no soy tan joven como yo creo que soy, ya han pasado 13 años desde que acabé mi primera titulación; o quizás confirma eso de que la edad sólo es un estado de ánimo.  Luego me pregunté, y me pregunto, cómo habrá cambiado la titulación en este tiempo. ¿Qué se les enseñará a las nuevas generaciones de ingenieras civiles? El mundo es otro, definitivamente. Para nuestra generación, al menos en ese contexto, el cambio climático no era una preocupación, ni siquiera un horizonte profesional. Todavía no había llegado la crisis financiera de 2008 y el boom de las infraestructuras estaba en pleno auge. Aún recuerdo como las principales empresas constructoras del país venían a dar charlas y a reclutar talento. Era habitual conseguir trabajo antes de incluso haber finalizado la carrera.

Ni que decir tiene que la situación actual es radicalmente distinta. Incendios, inundaciones, sequías, pérdida de biodiversidad, crisis humanitarias, olas de calor, déficit de inversión pública en infraestructura, deterioro de la percepción pública de la profesión, revolución digital… parece un momento perfecto para tirar el plan de estudios por la ventana y empezar de nuevo.  Muchos cambios de paradigma ya están en camino, y otros vendrán impulsados por la hija de mi amigo y su generación: de la figura del ingeniero como autoridad indiscutible a la de la persona que sabe escuchar, empatizar y crear consenso alrededor de un proyecto; de la gran infraestructura centralizada, monolítica y gestionada por una única entidad a sistemas descentralizados, flexibles, resilientes y comunitarios;  de proyectos politizados, opacos y corruptos a iniciativas impulsadas por la ciudadanía y apoyadas por un gobierno más abierto, ético y cercano;  de inversiones que ponen al ser humano (y el capital) por encima de todas las cosas, a intervenciones que buscan regenerar el planeta y coexistir con todas las formas de vida en él.  ¿Qué otros cambios de paradigma veis vosotras?

Puede ser que la universidad no lidere estos cambios, sino que, en el mejor de los casos, reaccione a ellos. Algunas grandes instituciones tienen mucha inercia y están demasiado cerca del problema. Durante mi última estancia en España me tocó una ola de calor y el principal tema de conversación en los medios de comunicación era el récord histórico del coste de la electricidad. Sin conocer el tema en detalle, la primera pregunta que me hice fue ¿cómo puede ser que no haya placas solares en todos los tejados del país con más sol de Europa?  Algo parecido ocurría en Ciudad de México, donde llueve más 1500 litros por metro cuadrado al año, pero la mayoría de la población tiene escasez de suministro de agua. No fue al gobierno sino a una asociación civil a la que se le ocurrió cosechar agua de lluvia de los tejados y dar autonomía hídrica a la gente que más lo necesita.  Las soluciones y el talento para llevarlas a cabo están ahí, distribuidas en las comunidades.

En las últimas semanas, cada vez que voy a escuchar música en youtube me aparece un anuncio de un curso para aprender a programar y así tener una de las habilidades más demandadas por compañías como amazon, facebook o google. La programación tiene grandes utilidades, muchas de las cuales son necesarias para la regeneración de nuestro planeta. Pero que el empleo más ansiado (y mejor pagado) vaya destinado a aquellas programadoras que sean capaces de tenerte más tiempo pegada a la pantalla del móvil o venderte más camisetas se me hace un ejemplo claro de nuestra falta de perspectiva como sociedad.

No todo está perdido. Las habilidades se aprenden en el día a día, fueran de las aulas, evolucionan con las necesidades y oportunidades de cada lugar y momento. Mi tío y mi madre me contaban hace poco como mi abuela operó en casa a una gallina que se había comido un caracol y se estaba ahogando. En la España de hace 60 años llevar a la gallina a la veterinaria no era una opción, dejarla morir tampoco.  Ella no tenía formación pero vivía en un contexto en el que había que resolverse los problemas por una misma. Abrió a la gallina, le extrajo el caracol y la cosió, sin tutorial de youtube. La gallina se salvó.  Igual que ejercían de cirujanas de emergencia, nuestras abuelas hacían tomate en conserva para preservar el excedente de la cosecha, hacían jabón reusando los aceites de cocina, cosían zapatos en casa para sacarse un dinero extra o mataban a un cerdo y producían comida para todo el año. A nosotras nos toca aprender a rehidratar la tierra, cultivar, regenerar ecosistemas, recuperar bosques, captar la lluvia, restaurar suelos, generar energía limpia, reconectar comunidades, crear consensos, sembrar amor y cosechar esperanza.  No puedo pensar en una profesión más bonita y necesaria para la hija de mi amigo.

A friend from university told me that her daughter is going to study the same degree in the same place we did. The first thing that came to mind was that I may not be as young as I think I am. It has been 13 years since I finished my bachelor. Or it may be that age is truly just a number.  Then I wondered, and I still do, how the degree has changed since then. What do they teach to the new generations of civil engineers? This is definitely a different world. For our generation, at least in that context, climate change was not a concern, neither a professional horizon. The 2008 financial crisis had not arrived yet and the infrastructure boom was at its peak. I still remember how big construction companies came to university to showcase their projects and recruit talent. It was normal to get a job even before you finished your degree.

Nothing to do with the current situation. Wildfires, floods, droughts, biodiversity loss, humanitarian crises, heat waves, lack of investment in infrastructure, deteriorating public perception of the profession, digital revolution…it feels like a perfect time to throw your curriculum out of the window and start from scratch. A lot of new paradigms are underway, and some others will be pushed by my friend’s daughter and her generation: from the engineer as the unquestionable authority to a professional who can listen, empathize and build consensus around a project; from the centralized, monolithic and single-handedly managed infrastructure to decentralized, flexible, resilient and community-managed systems; from politized, opaque and corrupted projects to grassroots initiatives supported by a more open, ethic and closer government; from human-centered (and capital driven) investments to regenerative interventions that allow us to coexist with all the forms of life in the planet. What other new paradigms do you see?

Universities may not lead these changes, maybe just react to them, if anything. Some large institutions are too static and too close to the problem. There was a heat wave during my last stay in Spain and the main topic in the media was the skyrocketing electricity price, the highest in the country’s history. I do not know enough about the topic but the first question that comes to mind is: how come there are not solar panels in all the roofs of the sunniest country in Europe? Something similar happened in Mexico City, where it rains over 1500 liters per square meter each year, but most of its inhabitants lack steady water supply.  It was not the government but a social enterprise who came up with a system to harvest rainwater from the roofs and provide hydric sovereignty to people who need it most. The solutions and talent to implement them are there, spread throughout communities.

In the last few weeks, every time I go to youtube to listen to music I get an ad promoting some training to learn how to code and get into companies like amazon, facebook or google. Programming has great potential and it can be applied towards the regeneration of our planet. But it says something about our lack of perspective as society when the most in-demand (and best paid) jobs go to those programmers who can keep you scrolling longer or sell you more t-shirts.

Everything is not lost. We learn skills in our daily lives, outside of the classroom, and they evolve with the needs and opportunities of each place and time. My uncle and my mom recently told me about a time when my grandmother had to operate a hen that was choking on a snail. 60 years ago, in rural Spain, bringing your hen to the vet was not an option, neither letting it die.  My grandma did not have any formal training but in her context she had to constantly solve problems on her own.  In a truly do-not-try-this-at-home moment, she opened the hen, removed the snail and sewed it up. Without a youtube tutorial. The hen survived.  Our grandmothers not only could act as emergency vets, they also made tomate sauce to preserve the harvest surplus, made soap reusing cooking oil, sewed shoes at home to make some money on the side or obtained a year-worth of meals from a home-raised pig. We need to learn how to rehydrate our landscapes, grow food, regenerate ecosystems, restore forests, harvest the rainfall, restore soils, generate clean energy, reconnect communities, build consensus, sow love and harvest hope. I cannot think of a most beautiful and necessary job for my friend’s daughter.
