This week a friend I had not talked to for thirteen years found me on the internet and emailed me. We both attended the same high school, in his town, next to my hometown, and then we stayed there too for university. He did architecture and I did civil engineering. It has been a while and I hope to have a beer with him over the holidays to catch up. He told me that he spent a few years building luxury shops in Barcelona, Madrid and England. Years passed by and he got tired of his lifestyle. He decided to go back to his hometown and work in agriculture. He had some doubts about his decision, but the pandemic wiped them out.

I have been thinking about agriculture lately. It is funny that we know almost nothing about such an essential business. For a long time there was a story (real or fictional) in Spain about a north American kid that was asked to draw where eggs come from and he replied with a supermarket shelf. We might be closer to that kid than we think. In an interview I heard a few weeks ago, someone said that the uncultured/coarse people of our age live in big cities. That person who for a Sunday hike wears jungle explorer gear, the influencer that eats peanuts, avocados or bananas daily but does not know where or how they grow (or even at the expense of whom). Even for someone from a small town like me, who has been exposed to agriculture since I was a kid, there is a bit of mystery around farming. Both my grandparents grew veggies, olive trees and almond trees, but most of that knowledge has been lost as my generation did not pick it up. I am not saying that their techniques were the best either.

Conventional/industrialized agriculture, the one that fills the supermarket’s shelves, it is a complete nonsense. It is hard to understand how an activity so closely related to nature ended up so far from it. Let us play to be landowners for a moment. Let us buy 10 hectares of land (10 soccer fields) between all the newsletter readers. By the way, it might not be a bad idea, that is what the billionaires are doing. Our objective is to make some money out of the land by growing something, whatever it is. The steps in industrialized agriculture would be: 1. Remove all the native vegetation, 2. Tilt and turn the soil, 3. Plant rows and rows of just one species, let us say cherry trees. 4. Install an irrigation system. 5. Hire your local supplier of the technology package (chemicals for your soil to produce), 6. Harvest your cherries.  Makes sense, right?  These steps are part of any conventional agriculture farm, all and each of them go against what we see in nature.  Do you see monocrop when you are walking in a forest? If roots are communication and food channels between plants, how come we turn the soil and destroy them? Is it acceptable that the soil is less fertile every year? Is it reasonable that we use chemicals in our food that not even the tractor driver can breath? No. Absolutely not.

I am bringing good news though. There are agriculture alternatives that allow you to obtain profit, regenerate the soil, break free from toxic products and fight climate change. And it is not a theorical model. There are thousands of hectares already cultivated in such a way. This “new” agriculture started in Brazil 40 years ago, and it is based on replicating and accelerating processes we see in nature. There are slightly different branches (syntropic agriculture, agroforestry, biodynamic agriculture, successional agroforestry) but all of them use a partnership between plants that nourish each other and create the optimum conditions for growth and soil regeneration. Coming back to our 10 hectares of cherry trees:  let us keep all the native vegetation except for the rows in which we are planting so the ground is covered (keeps the moisture, avoids erosion), plant the cherry trees in addition to dozens of other species of faster growth (vegetables, flowers, cereals, shrubs). These species, which are named placenta, create the optimum growth conditions (humidity, organic matter, microorganisms) for the cherry trees, while producing natural mulch to cover and feed the soil. We go from a linear, isolated and chemical- dependent system to a complex, interconnected and self-sufficient one. A beautiful solution inspired by nature.

Water supply and sanitation, transportation, waste management, conservation, energy production… literally every single process of our daily lives must be redefined to face our planetary crisis. Syntropic agriculture may be showing us the way.  We are surrounded by answers. We just need to stop and observe.

Esta semana un amigo con el que no hablaba desde trece años me encontró gracias a internet y me mandó un mensaje. Los dos hicimos la secundaria en el mismo colegio, en su pueblo, cerca del mío, y continuamos ahí la etapa universitaria, él en arquitectura técnica, yo en obras públicas.  Ha llovido mucho, y espero poder tomar una cerveza con él durante las navidades para ponernos al día. Me contó que estuvo trabajando un tiempo construyendo tiendas de lujo entre Barcelona, Madrid e Inglaterra. Con el paso de los años se cansó de ese estilo de vida y decidió volver al pueblo para dedicarse a la agricultura. Tenía algunas dudas de su decisión, pero me dice que la pandemia las disipó todas.

La agricultura ha estado en mi mente últimamente. Es curioso que sepamos tan poco de una actividad productiva tan esencial. Durante mucho tiempo circuló por España una anécdota (no sé si real o ficticia) de un niño norteamericano al que le pidieron en clase que dibujara de dónde venían los huevos y contestó con una estantería de supermercado. Quizás estamos más cerca de ese niño de lo que pensamos. En una entrevista que escuché hace poco, alguien decía que el “paleto” de nuestra época vive en las grandes ciudades. Esa persona que se viste como si fuera a la selva para salir un domingo a pasear por la montaña, la persona influencer que come cacahuetes, aguacates o plátanos a diario pero no sabe dónde ni cómo crecen (ni a costa de quién). Incluso para alguien de pueblo como yo, que desde niño ha estado expuesto a la agricultura, hay cierto halo de misterio alrededor del campo. Mis abuelos tenían huertos de hortalizas, olivos y almendros, pero mucha parte de ese conocimiento se ha ido perdiendo a medida que mi generación no ha tomado el relevo. Tampoco quiero decir que sus formas de agricultura fueran las más idóneas.

La agricultura convencional/ industrializada, la que surte las estanterías de los supermercados, es un auténtico sinsentido. Es difícil entender cómo una actividad tan estrechamente ligada a la naturaleza ha acabado tan alejada de ella.  Juguemos a ser terratenientes por un momento. Entre todas las lectoras del boletín vamos a comprar 10 hectáreas de terreno (10 campos de fútbol). Por cierto, quizás no es una mala idea, es lo que están haciendo los billonarios del mundo. Nuestro objetivo es sacar rendimiento al territorio cultivando algo, lo que sea. Los pasos a seguir para una explotación convencional serían: 1. arranca toda la vegetación nativa, 2. pasa el arado para revolver el suelo, 3. plantar filas y filas de un solo cultivo, digamos que cerezos, 4. Instala un sistema de riego, 5. Contrata a tu proveedor de confianza para que te suministre tu paquete tecnológico (químicos sin los cuales tu suelo no va a producir), 6. Cosecha tus cerezas. Suena coherente, ¿o no? Todos y cada uno de estos pasos se ven en cualquier explotación convencional, y todos y cada uno van en contra de lo que vemos en la naturaleza. ¿Acaso se ve monocultivo cuándo vas paseando por un bosque?, si las raíces son canales de comunicación y alimentación entre las plantas, ¿tiene sentido que pasemos el arado y las destruyamos? ¿es aceptable que el suelo de la agricultura convencional sea menos fértil cada año? ¿es razonable que usemos químicos para nuestros alimentos que ni siquiera la persona que lleva el tractor puede respirar? No. Rotundo.

Traigo buenas noticias hoy. Hay formas de agricultura que permiten sacar un rendimiento económico, regenerar el suelo, no depender de químicos tóxicos y combatir el cambio climático. Y no es un modelo teórico. Ya hay miles de hectáreas cultivadas de esta forma. Esta “nueva” agricultura, se inició en Brasil hace 40 años, y se basa en replicar y acelerar los procesos que observamos en la naturaleza.  Existen distintas ramas según ciertos matices (agricultura sintrópica, agroforestería, agricultura biodinámica, sistemas agroforestales sucesionales) pero todas tienen como fundamento el consorcio entre plantas que se nutren mutuamente para crear condiciones de crecimiento óptimo y la regeneración del suelo. Volviendo a nuestras 10 hectáreas de cerezos: mantenemos la vegetación nativa excepto en las líneas de cultivo para que el suelo esté siempre cubierto (retenga el agua, evite la erosión), plantamos los cerezos acompañados de decenas de otras especies de más rápido crecimiento (hortalizas, flores, cereales, arbustos). Estas otras especies, que reciben el nombre de placenta, van a crear las condiciones óptimas de crecimiento (humedad, materia orgánica, micro-organismos) para los cerezos, a la vez que generan forraje que usaremos para continuamente cubrir y nutrir el suelo. Pasamos de un sistema lineal, aislado y dependiente de químicos, a un sistema complejo, interconectado y autosuficiente. Una solución bella e inspirada en la naturaleza.

El suministro y la depuración del agua, el transporte, la gestión de residuos, la conservación de los ecosistemas, la producción de energía… literalmente cada proceso de nuestra vida diaria va a tener que redefinirse para poder hacer frente a la crisis planetaria. La agricultura sucesional quizás nos esté enseñando el camino. Las respuestas están a nuestro alrededor, hay que parar y observar.
