¿Acaso no es algo revolucionario?/ Is not it revolutionary?

Podría alegar que me salté el boletín de hace dos semanas porque estaba haciendo un homenaje al situacionismo, aunque en realidad sería un poco como la excusa en el colegio de que el perro se comió mis deberes.  El situacionismo es un movimiento cultural que se desarrolló en París alrededor de la segunda mitad del siglo pasado y que tenía como propósito reapropiarse de la ciudad como un lugar lúdico y lleno de experiencias para sus habitantes. Los situacionistas, jóvenes inconformes con el rumbo que estaban tomando las ciudades- entre otras cosas con la hegemonía de los coches y el consumismo-, se reunían para explorar la urbe de pies a cabeza, creando tiempo y espacio para lo inesperado, lo espontáneo. A veces se emborrachaban y pasaban horas vagando por barrios desconocidos o por estaciones de metro, otras veces usaban mapas de distintas ciudades para caminar por París, creando un ambiente de confusión que contribuía a experimentar la ciudad en vivo, sin rumbo predefinido. Así pues, no tuve tiempo de escribir el boletín hace dos semanas porque estuve caminando sin rumbo durante horas por Toronto.

Parece que, sin saberlo, soy un situacionista desde hace décadas. Hace poco mi amigo Ramón me recordaba que cuando vivíamos en la residencia de estudiantes de Delft yo insistía en organizar salidas nocturnas en bici por el pueblo, sin ruta marcada, y con la única condición de que no podíamos gastar ni un céntimo. No es que fuera tacaño, aunque cuando eres estudiante se sabe que el ocio gratuito es necesario, sino que quería explorar el pueblo desde otra perspectiva, tener otras experiencias. Cuando salíamos con dinero era habitual acabar en un bar tomando una cerveza, un trozo de tarta de manzana o un falafel al lado del canal.  Sin dinero ni propósito había más espacio para la espontaneidad. Recuerdo que me gustaba pasar por una casa con techos altísimos y ventanales gigantes en el centro de Delft y ver qué estaba pasando en el interior, recorrer calles estrechas y descubrir negocios ocultos o canales menos transitados, ver a holandesas salir del bar con unas cervezas de más y regresar a casa en bici con cierta dificultad. Siento que ese interés en explorar la ciudad metro a metro, perderse en sus calles, dejarse sorprender por ella, se va perdiendo a medida que llevamos más tiempo en ella y nos hacemos más mayores.  Un poco como en las relaciones de pareja, la familiaridad y la cotidianidad desplazan a la sorpresa y la aventura. No ayuda que tenemos vidas super ocupadas, en las que trabajamos más que nunca y que nos empujan a invertir el escaso tiempo de ocio en actividades que cuestan dinero, y así justificar que nuestras vidas ocupadas tienen sentido. La pescadilla que se muerde la cola.

Caminé durante horas por Toronto, sin rumbo ni propósito, empapándome de la vida de la ciudad como si acabara de llegar a ella por primera vez.  Disfruté de la sombra de los árboles grandiosos y de la multiculturalidad de cada barrio, me encontré con amigas/os inesperadamente (de ahí la foto de abajo), me impresionó ver cómo la “cultura” de la comida para llevar es algo masivo y, a mi parecer, decadente – en la entrada de los edificios de apartamentos hay mesas repletas de bolsas esperando a ser recogidas-, observé que los perros se han convertido en instrumentos para socializar y romper el hielo entre vecinas y aluciné con la desproporcionada cantidad de tiendas de cannabis (definitivamente hay una burbuja y en algún momento tendrá que estallar). En la concepción de la ciudad en norte América, la calle es un lugar de paso, y preferiblemente en coche. El ocio ocurre en bares, restaurantes y parques. Creo que algo similar ocurre en ciudades del norte de Europa, aunque ahí al menos las calles son lugar de paso para bicis y autobuses y no para todo-terrenos y SUVs.  En la concepción mediterránea del espacio público, las calles son lugares de tránsito pero también de recreación, de descanso y de disfrute, una extensión del hogar. La gente no tiene jardines en casa, así que se encuentran en la calle. Si bien es cierto que esta visión está en declive (cada vez más espacio está siendo tomado por manos privados ya sea hostelería, publicidad o transporte) todavía mantiene su esencia. Recuerdo que al llegar a Toronto por primera vez me sorprendía ver carteles por todas las partes de “no loitering”. Durante mucho tiempo no entendí esa obsesión con la lotería, hasta que entendí que loitering y lottery eran cosas muy distintas. El concepto de loitering no existe en español, pero podría traducirse como vaguear, holgazanear (el acto de permanecer en un lugar público específico durante un tiempo prolongado sin un propósito aparente, según la Wikipedia).  En norte América, el loitering se asocia con crimen y actividades no deseadas y está prohibido en ciertas circunstancias. Si alguien no se está moviendo (o consumiendo), algo malo está haciendo.

Cualquier cosa que implique París y los años 60 tiene más glamur que todo lo que podamos intentar ahora. Los situacionistas tenían manifiestos, estética propia y, admitámoslo, propuestas inigualables. Querían dar acceso público y conectar las azoteas de la ciudad a través de pasarelas, abrir las cárceles para que la gente pudiera visitarlas y pasar tiempo en ellas o cerrar los museos y diseminar sus obras de arte por los bares. Aún así, celebro a la gente que sigue intentando reclamar la ciudad como un espacio de juego y diversión. En Toronto, cada miércoles por la noche un grupo de gente variada se reúne para recorrer la ciudad en bicicleta, sin rumbo predefinido ni objetivo más allá de pasar unas horas explorando los barrios en grupo. Decoran sus bicis con luces de neón, ponen música a todo volumen y vagan durante horas. Recuerdo el sentimiento de libertad y euforia al cruzar avenidas principales, normalmente repletas de coches, y ver la reacción de la gente. ¿Acaso no es algo revolucionario?

I could argue that I skipped my newsletter two weeks ago because I was taking part in a homage to the situationism, although it would be a bit like blaming my dog for eating my homework. The situationism is a cultural movement that took place in Paris around the second half of the last century with the purpose of reappropriating the city as a playful and experiential place for its inhabitants. The situationists, young people unsatisfied with the direction cities were taking -among other things, the hegemony of cars and consumerism-, gathered to explore the city inch by inch, making time and space for the unexpected, the spontaneous. Sometimes they would get drunk and spend hours wandering across unknown neighbourhoods or subway stations, sometimes they used maps from other cities to navigate in Paris, placing themselves in a confusing environment that contributed to experiencing the city live, without a predefined route.  Hence, I did not have time to write my newsletter two weeks ago because I wander in Toronto for hours.

It seems that, without knowing, I have been a situationist for decades. Not long ago my friend Ramón reminded me that, when we lived in a student housing in Delft, I insisted on organizing nocturnal bike rides across town, with no plan, the only condition being not to spend even a cent. It was not because I was cheap, although when you are a student free leisure is needed, but because I wanted to explore the town from a different perspective, have other experiences. When we went out with money we likely ended up having a beer in a bar, a piece of apple pie or a falafel next to a canal. Without money and purpose there was more space for the spontaneous. I liked passing by a downtown house with double high ceiling and huge windows and check what was going on inside, ride narrow streets and discover hidden shops or less transited canals, see Dutchies leaving a bar with a few too many beers and make their way home in their bikes testing their riding skills. I feel that our interest in exploring every corner of the city, getting lost in their streets, letting yourself be surprised by it, fades the longer we inhabit it and the older we get. A bit like in a sentimental relationship, daily life and familiarity displace surprise and adventure. It does not help that we have hyper busy lives, work more than ever and spend our scarce leisure time in activities that cost money, so we can find meaning in our busy lives. A dog chasing its tail.

I walked in Toronto for hours, with neither purpose nor route, taking in all the city life as if I had just arrived for the first time. I enjoyed the shade of the huge tree canopy and the multicultural fabric of each neighbourhood, I rain into friends I had not seen for months (see photo above), I was shocked by the scale (and decadent aspect, in my opinion) of the delivered food “culture” – condo buildings have tables full of bags to be picked up-, I noticed that dogs have become tools to socialize and break the ice between neighbours, and found the amount of cannabis shops mind blogging (there is definitely a bubble in that market and at some point it will burst).  In the north American concept of the city, the street is a place for transition, preferably in a car. Leisure usually happens in bars, restaurants and parks. Something similar happens in cities of northern Europe, although at least streets are a place for transition in a bus or a bike instead of a SUV. In the Mediterranean concept of the public space, streets are not only spaces to pass by but also places to spend time, take a break and have fun, an extension of home. Most of the people do not have backyards, so they gather in the streets. Unfortunately, this paradigm is under attack (more space is being taken by private players for patios, transportation or publicity), but the essence is still there. I was very surprised when I arrived in Toronto for the first time and saw so many “no loitering” signs everywhere. I could not understand that obsession with lottery, until I learned that loitering and lottery were very different things. There is no such a concept in Spain, otherwise the whole city should be under arrest for suspicious activities. In North America, if someone is not moving (or consuming), something bad is cooking up.

Anything that involves Paris and the 60s is far more glamorous that anything else we can try now. The situationists have manifestos, a particular look and, let us admit it, unbeatable proposals. They wanted rooftops across the city to be publicly accessible and connected by bridges, advocated for jails to be open so people could visit and spend time in them, wanted to close museums and distribute their art work in bars throughout the city.  Nevertheless, I celebrate people who keep trying to reclaim the city as a place for play and joy. In Toronto, every Wednesday night a group of diverse people gather to ride their bikes across the city, with no route or purpose other that spending a few hours exploring different neighbourhoods with other people. They tune-up their bikes with neon lights, play loud music and wander for hours. I remember a feeling of freedom and euphoria when crossing main avenues, normally clogged by cars, and seeing people’s reactions. Is not it revolutionary?
