I am not an early adopter; it should be clear by now for those of you who have been reading this newsletter for over a year. It has happened a few times that I noticed “new” trends and concepts in music, fashion or anything else and ran to tell my partner, and she would reply by saying “yes, but it is not that new, it has been going on for at least 3 years”.  So full disclaimer here, if you joined this newsletter to learn about cryptocurrency, NFTs or artificial intelligence… you clicked the wrong link (and I did a very bad job with the newsletter’s one-liner).  Anyhow, I recently started reading about permaculture, which is a sustainability design framework coined in Australia in the 1970s. Drawing from Indigenous and traditional knowledge, permaculture proposes design principles to achieve a permanent culture- that is, a household, farm or community- that integrates within, learns from and regenerates their surrounding ecosystems. The popularity of permaculture exploded and there are hundreds of thousands of practitioners applying its principles worldwide. It just took me a little longer to get there.

On May 1st, there is a national holiday in Spain to celebrate Labour day (Día del Trabajador/a ). It is a day to commemorate all the work done by activists, unions and workers that led to worker’s rights such as the 40-hour working week, paid sick days, parental leave, paid vacation, etc. It also is a day when workers take the streets to collectively demand new rights, or more frequently in our times, try to maintain what they have. Overall, it is a reminder of the collective efforts required for society to progress.  Funny enough, May 1st happens to also be world permaculture day. My social media feed was flooded with people showing off their amazing food forest gardens, bioconstructed off-the-grid chalets and walking-dead-proof rainwater harvesting tanks. It all sounds good, but it seems that we are missing the whole point about “permanent culture”.   How can you tackle systems change if you do not even know and relate to people you are surrounded by? To integrate within, learn from and regenerate your context you need to go beyond your four walls.

A friend in Mexico wanted to build a small fence around his house to keep the dog inside. He invited about 15 friends, and provided building materials, beer and food. We spent the day working together on building the fence, met new people, learned new skills and had a good time. He could not afford to hire 15 workers to get the job done in one day, but he surely can afford to help other friends when needed. They take turns in helping each other, no money involved. His plan is a domestic adaptation of an Indigenous practice called Tequio (or Minga in Ecuador, Hacendera in Spain) in which every community member must spend some unpaid time working in tasks for the public good such as the maintenance of roads and schools, cleaning of water infrastructure or building of municipal offices.  Rather than Do it Yourself, Do It Together. More effective, more fun and more meaningful. It may not be a new trend, neither an idea born in Silicon Valley, but it is something we definitely need if we want to bring some permanency to our cultures.

Stephanie (Mount Maunganui): This last newsletter reminds me of a quote by Gus Speth – "I used to think that the top environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse, and climate change. I thought that thirty years of good science could address these problems. I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed, and apathy, and to deal with these we need a cultural and spiritual transformation. And we scientists don't know how to do that."

Hilary (Newmarket): Change is messy and chaotic by its very nature so for many this feels like a highly unnatural state. Your point about learning is critical. What if we regenerate protests? What about not just communicating the seriousness of climate change but also helping us to fall in love again with this most magnificent planet and its fascinating species. What about profiling the work of those like Veda Austin who explores the mind-boggling intelligence of water? What about sharing the artwork of sages like Autumn Skye that embodies the complex relationships of People and Nature. Her piece entitled Hope with a woman and a polar bear on an ice float evokes the mystery and magic of the future amidst the climate crisis. I so agree that scientists coming out to protests is a game changer. We also need to fall in love again

Alfonso (Eindhoven):  I have been thinking for most of my life that environmental impact can and must be reduced. However, I am convinced that unfortunately will not be possible. There are solutions and technologies to achieve it, but we lack the human factor. Most of the people in this planet are too busy with surviving. The first world’s elites do not want to lose any privileges, they even want more. Some people, not the majority though, wants to do something to change the world. They install solar panels, take the bus, eat less meat, etc. They mostly do it to feel better and out of guilt. I am one of these. Of course, there are people who really want to change and make it happen. In a change management training, I learned that we humans only change when we feel it absolutely is necessary. The war has changed the energy mix. What the different COPs have not achieved for decades, is now a reality. The human factor wants to leave fossil fuels, at least from Russia. The next change will likely come when we watch the news about the South Pole not being a pole anymore  ;-)

No soy una persona de vanguardia; creo que ya debería de estar claro para aquellas personas que han estado leyendo este boletín desde hace más de un año. Me ha pasado varias veces que he notado una “nueva” tendencia en música, moda o cualquier otra cosa y cuando se lo he dicho a mi pareja, ella me ha contestado “sí, pero no es tan nuevo, empezó al menos hace 3 años”. Así que quedan avisadas, si te uniste al boletín para aprender sobre criptomonedas, NFTs o inteligencia artificial… creo que apretaste la tecla equivocada (y yo expliqué muy mal de que iba esto). En cualquier caso, últimamente he estado leyendo sobre permacultura, que es un marco de diseño de sostenibilidad que fue acuñado en Australia en los años 70s. Tomando conceptos del conocimiento indígena y tradicional del lugar, la permacultura propone unos principios de diseño para lograr una cultura permanente. Esto es una vivienda, finca o comunidad que se integra, aprende de y regenera los ecosistemas de los que se rodea. La popularidad de la permacultura ha estallado y hay cientos de miles de profesionales aplicando sus principios alrededor del mundo. Yo tardé un poco más en llegar a ella.

El primero de mayo se celebra el Día del Trabajador/a en España. Es una fiesta nacional para conmemorar toda la lucha de activistas, sindicatos y trabajadoras/es que ha permitido el acceso a derechos como la jornada laboral de 40 horas semanales, la baja por enfermedad, la baja maternal y paternal, vacaciones pagadas, etc. También sigue siendo un día en el que sindicatos y trabajadoras/es salen a la calle a manifestarse para pedir nuevos derechos, o más frecuentemente en nuestros días, intentar no perder los que ya tienen. Es un recordatorio del esfuerzo colectivo que se requiere para que la sociedad avance.  Sorprendentemente, el primero de mayo se ha nombrado el día mundial de la permacultura (no sé por quién). Mi pantalla de redes sociales se inundó de gente mostrando sus bosques comestibles, chalés de bio-construcción autosuficientes y sistemas de captación de lluvia a prueba de apocalipsis. Se ve genial, pero me parece que se nos está escapando la cuestión principal sobre la “cultura permanente”. ¿Cómo puedes cambiar un sistema si ni siquiera conoces ni te relacionas con la gente que te rodea? Para integrarte, aprender de y regenerar tu contexto tienes que ir más allá de las cuatro paredes de tu casa.

Un amigo en México quería construir una pequeña valla alrededor de su casa para su perro. Invitó a 15 amigas/os y compró los materiales, comida y cerveza. Pasamos el día trabajando en grupo construyendo la valla, conocimos gente nueva, aprendimos nuevas habilidades y lo pasamos genial. Mi amigo no tenía dinero para contratar a 15 trabajadoras/es para acabar el trabajo en un día, pero si puede donar su tiempo cuando otras amigas/os lo necesitan.  Se toman turnos para ayudarse unas a otras, sin intercambio de dinero. Su plan es una adaptación doméstica de una práctica indígena llamada Tequio (o Minga en Ecuador, Hacendera en España) en la que cada miembro de la comunidad debe ofrecer parte de su tiempo para trabajar en tareas para el bien común como el mantenimiento de calles y colegios, la limpieza de canales de agua o la construcción de oficinas municipales. En lugar de hazlo tú mismo, hazlo en grupo. Más efectivo, más divertido y con más impacto. Puede que no sea una nueva tendencia, tampoco una idea nacida de Silicon Valley, pero es algo que vamos a necesitar si queremos traer la permanencia a nuestras culturas.

Estaba equivocado. Los principales problemas son el egoísmo, la codicia y la apatía, y para lidiar con eso necesitamos una transformación cultural y espiritual. Y nosotros las y los científicos no sabemos cómo hacer eso".

Hilary (Newmarket):  El cambio es desordenado y caótico por naturaleza, lo que hace que para muchas personas se sienta como un estado poco natural. Tu punto sobre el aprendizaje es crítico. ¿Qué pasaría si regeneráramos protestas? ¿Y si vamos más allá de comunicar la seriedad del cambio climático y nos ayudaos a enamorarnos otra vez de este espectacular planeta y de sus fascinantes especies? Hablemos del trabajo de gente como Veda Austin, quien explora la abrumadora inteligencia del agua. Compartamos el arte de gente como Autumn Skye que representa la relación compleja entre humanos y naturaleza. Su obra titulada Hope (esperanza) con una mujer y un oso polar en un trozo de hielo flotante evoca la magia y el misterio del futuro en medio de la crisis climática. Estoy de acuerdo en que las protestas de la gente de la ciencia es un paso más allá. También necesitamos volver a enamorarnos.

Alfonso (Eindhoven):  He estado una buena parte de mi vida pensando que el impacto medioambiental se puede y se tiene que mejorar, contrarrestar, disminuir, etc. He llegado sin embargo al convencimiento de que desgraciadamente no va a ser posible. Se podría vivir sin estropear el planeta y hay medios y tecnología suficiente para hacerlo. Lo que falla es el factor humano. Fundamentalmente creo que la mayoría del planeta está muy ocupado con sobrevivir. Una parte de la élite sobre todo en el primer mundo no está dispuesta a perder las comodidades. Más aún, quieren más. Una parte de bien pensantes, ni mucho menos la mayoría, les gustaría hacer algo por mejorar el mundo. Ponen paneles solares, cogen el bus, comen menos carne, etc. Mayormente calman así su sentimiento de culpabilidad. Yo me encuentro entre estos últimos. Claro que hay personas que realmente están convencidas de esta causa y lo dicen y hacen.  En un entrenamiento sobre la gestión de cambios, me quedó muy claro que en nuestra psicología las personas manejamos el mecanismo por el cual cambiamos un comportamiento sólo si y solamente cuando sentimos que es necesario. La guerra ha cambiado el clima energético. Lo que masas de cumbres políticas no han conseguido en décadas, es ahora una realidad. El factor humano ve necesario dejar la energía fósil. Al menos la de Rusia. El siguiente cambio vendrá probablemente cuando veamos en los medios cómo el polo sur ya no es un polo ;-)
