Deja que la magia ocurra/ Let the magic happen

En septiembre casi 4,5 millones de personas renunciaron a su trabajo en Estados Unidos. En abril fueron 4 millones. Unas cifras que no se registraban en más de 20 años, “La gran renuncia”, le llaman.  Hay quien no quiere volver a la oficina, ahora que le obligan, o quien ha ahorrado un poco durante los meses de confinamiento y prefiere cambiar de sector o buscar mejores condiciones. Las prioridades han cambiado, aunque no todo el mundo tiene el privilegio de poder elegir.

La noción de lo que es una carrera profesional varía mucho temporal y geográficamente. En la generación de mis padres en España, mucha gente entraba a trabajar en un banco, ayuntamiento o compañía telefónica a los 18 años y podía “hacer carrera” allí y jubilarse en el mismo lugar. Empieza a haber más movilidad profesional pero todavía hoy es frecuente que amigos míos se dediquen a lo mismo que se dedicaban sus padres, o que les reemplacen en sus puestos de trabajo en las mismas empresas. En Toronto, y norteamérica en general, esto es algo impensable. La mayoría de mis amistades o gente con la que yo he trabajado ni siquiera tiene a su familia en el país, o si la tienen, hacen su carrera profesional de manera independiente y autónoma. El trabajo es parte de la economía de mercado, sin lazos emocionales. Aún recuerdo la primera vez que alguien se fue de mi trabajo en Toronto: mandó un correo electrónico con dos semanas de anticipación anunciando que se iba, y sin pena ni gloria, se fue. No lo podía creer.

Pienso que las carreras, al igual que las vidas personales, no son lineales. Y la no linealidad debería ser celebrada y valorada. Si algo demuestra alguien que ha sabido adaptarse a distintos empleos en distintos lugares es que es flexible y capaz de aprender continuamente, cualidades esenciales en un mundo en cambio constante.

“Una carrera no es algo que te pones como un abrigo. Es algo que crece orgánicamente alrededor de ti, paso a paso, decisión tras decisión, experiencia tras experiencia. Todo suma. Ningún trabajo está por debajo de ti. Nada es una pérdida de tiempo, a no ser que tú lo conviertas en eso”,

dijo el antropólogo Wade Davis cuando le pidieron hace unos años que diera un discurso para la promoción de universidad de una sus hijas.

Y sobre la infinidad de formas que puede tomar tu carrera continuó:

“te darás cuenta de que el trabajo que tú haces es sólo una lente a través de la cual ver y experimentar el mundo, y sólo por un tiempo limitado. El objetivo es el hacer del vivir, del hecho de estar vivo, tu vocación, sabiendo que nada puede ser planificado o anticipado, no hay mapas para predecir los resultados de algo tan complejo como la vida humana. Si permaneces abierta al potencial de lo nuevo, la promesa de lo inimaginable, entonces la magia ocurre y la vida toma su rumbo. Esto, lo prometo, os ocurrirá a cada una de vosotras”.

Todo tiene matices, y no quisiera que el argumento de una carrera fluida y flexible se usara para justificar la precariedad laboral actual: falsos autónomos, compañías que usan algoritmos que mantienen a todas las empleadas bajo un límite mensual para no tener que darles prestaciones sociales (véase Uber y Amazon), repartidores de comida sin ninguna protección legal, etc. Tampoco para negar el hecho de que muchas personas no tienen el privilegio de poder elegir su carrera y navegar la incertidumbre económica que conllevan los cambios constantes.  Pero el empleo “permanente” y “estable” tampoco debería convertirse en esa jaula dorada que aboca a la infelicidad a tantos millones de personas. Y cada país tiene sus argumentos para fabricar esta jaula: en España, el miedo a la inestabilidad económica que todavía es la sombra alargada de la posguerra; en Canadá, los llamados “beneficios”, costes de ir al dentista o al masajista que son cubiertos por tu trabajo cuando eres empleada de larga duración.  En cuanto a la validez de estos argumentos, habría mucho que discutir.  La economía de España ha cambiado mucho en 70 años y quien entre al mercado laboral ahora ya ni habrá oído hablar de la posguerra; en Toronto en diciembre es casi imposible encontrar masajista porque todas las empleadas de grandes compañías están pidiendo citas para gastar sus beneficios y no dejarlos en balde, lo que demuestra que realmente no los necesitan o que trabajan demasiado y no tienen tiempo para ellos. No es que un tipo de carrera sea mejor que los otros, todas las trayectorias son válidas si te permiten tener el estilo de vida que tú quieres.

La posibilidad de existencia de carreras no lineales o no convencionales es para mi un alivio. Nunca me consideré preparado para asentarme en un empleo y pasar allí 40 años, tampoco para centrarme en una sola profesión y dejar del lado otras. Cuando era niño yo quería ser escritor, incluso pensé en estudiar periodismo. “Quizás se muere de hambre, pero si es lo que le gusta debería hacerlo” le dijo un profesor de mi colegio a mis padres. Por un tiempo consideré esa opción, hasta que en una prueba de aptitudes antes de acabar el bachillerato me hablaron de la carrera de ingeniería de obras públicas y la idea me llamó la atención. Años más tarde me preguntaba si estaba dejando del lado mi vocación de escritor. En una época de mi vida también me dediqué a la música, con mucha satisfacción. Hubo un momento hace pocos años en el que pensé que quizás era una mala idea el dejar de lado la música. Yo iba en un avión a Colombia de vacaciones leyendo el libro de “Mozart en la jungla” en el que una concertista cuenta su historia como oboísta de la orquesta sinfónica de Nueva York. El señor sentado junto a mi en el avión me preguntó por el libro, y comenzamos una conversación inolvidable. Él era profesor de violín en Toronto, había tocado en orquestas sinfónicas por todo el mundo e incluso había desayunado con el mito del jazz Duke Ellington. “No te engañes, gente como tú está haciendo algunas de las cosas más interesantes en el mundo de la música”. Yo no entendía nada. Siguió, “conozco a tanta gente que tiene trabajos estables que les dan independencia económica y estabilidad para poder hacer el estilo de música que les da la gana, cómo y cuándo quieren”. Unos años después grabé mi primer disco con un grupo de afrobeat y ahora me siento a escribir cada dos semanas.

Almost 4.5 million people quit their jobs in September in the United States. 4 million people in April. These are record figures, the highest in more than 20 years. “The Great Resignation” they call it.  Some people do not want to go back to the office, now that they are asked to do so, other workers saved a bit during the lockdown and prefer to change industries or look for better conditions. Priorities have shifted, although not everyone has the privilege of being able to choose.

The concept of career varies over time and across geographies. For my parents’ generation in Spain, it was common to get a job in a bank, a municipality or a phone company when you came of age and stay there until you retired. That seemed to be different nowadays, but it still is frequent that some friends of mine work on the same sectors their parents did, or even replace them in the same companies. In Toronto, and North America in general, this is something unthinkable. Most of my friends or coworkers do not even have their families in the country, or if they do, they launched their careers in an independent and autonomous way. Work is part of the market economy, no emotional strings attached. I still remember the first time that someone from work left its job in Toronto: they just sent an email with a two-week notice, and then they left. Neither pain nor glory. I could not believe it.

I think careers, as personal lives, are nonlinear. And this non-linearity should be celebrated and appreciated. Someone who has had different jobs in different places shows that it is flexible and has a growth mindset, essential skills in an ever-changing world.

“A career is not something that you put on like a coat. It is something that grows organically around you, step-by-step, choice-by-choice, and experience-by-experience. Everything adds up. No work is beneath you. Nothing is a waste of time unless you make it so”,

said the anthropologist Wade Davis at a commencement speech for her daughter’s college class. And about the multiple shapes your career can take he added:

“you’ll find that the work you do is just a lens through which to view and experience the world, and only for a time. The goal is to make living itself, the act of being alive, one’s vocation, knowing full well that nothing ultimately can be planned or anticipated, no blueprint found to predict the outcome of something as complex as a human life. If one can remain open to the potential of the new, the promise of the unimagined, then magic happens and a life takes form. This, I promise, will happen to each one of you”.

This is not black or white, and I would not like the argument of a fluid and flexible professional life to be used towards justifying the precarious work environment of our age: false freelancers, companies that use algorithms to create schedules that keep every worker hours under the threshold that would trigger benefits or employee rights (think of Uber and Amazon), food delivery people without any legal protection, etc. There are plenty of people who do not have the privilege of choosing a career or being able to afford the economic uncertainty these constant changes imply. But the so-called “permanent” and “steady” jobs should not become a gilded cage that leads to unfulfilling lives for so many people. And every country has its own arguments to create this cage: in Spain, the fear of economic instability, a reminiscence of the postwar times; in Canada, employee benefits, this allocation that every permanent worker gets from the company to spend in the dentist or in getting massages. These arguments are quite weak. The Spanish economy has changed a lot in the last 70 years and whoever is entering the job market now has not even heard about the postwar times;  it is almost impossible to find a massage therapist in December in Toronto because all the workers from the big companies are scheduling their appointments not to let their benefits go to waste, which shows that either they do not need them or they work too much and do not have time for that. One career is not better that the rest, everything is valid if it allows you to have the lifestyle you want to have.

The possibility of non-linear or non-conventional careers is a relief for me. I have never been ready to settle in a job and spend 40 years there, or even to focus on just one thing and set the rest aside. When I was a kid I wanted to be a writer.  I even thought about studying journalism. “He may starve to death but if this is what he likes, he should do it”, my high school teacher told my parents. I considered that for a while, until they told me about civil engineering in a skills test I did before going to university. Years later I still wondered if I had made a mistake not following my journalism dreams. At some point in my life I made a living playing music. It was so much fun that I also had doubts later on in my life whether I had taken the right decision.  I was in a plane to spend some holidays in Colombia and I was reading “Mozart in the Jungle”, the insider stories of an oboist in the New York symphony orchestra. The gentleman travelling next to me asked about the book, and we started having an unforgettable conversation. He was a violin professor in Toronto, had played with symphony orchestras all around the world and even had had breakfast with sir Duke Ellington, the jazz legend. “Do not make a fool of yourself, people like you are making some of the most interesting music nowadays”. I did not understand anything. He continued “I know so many musicians that have permanent jobs that give them financial independence and stability so they can make any music they want, whatever and whenever they want”. Years later I recorded my first album with an afrobeat band and now I sit down to write every two weeks.
