Agua

No puedo creer que haya tardado 59 boletines y más de 3 años en escribir sobre uno de mis temas favoritos: el Agua. Ayer me invitaron a una mesa redonda en Ottawa, así que he pensado en aprovechar la oportunidad para hablar de ello también aquí. ¿Por dónde empezar? Desde mis primeros días como estudiante de ingeniería civil, el Agua era el único tema que realmente me interesaba. Veía a mis compañeros/as entusiasmarse con puentes, carreteras, aeropuertos, ferrocarriles... Pero para mí era el Agua. Recuerdo los paseos por el río de mi pueblo pensando en lo que acababa de aprender en clase. No podía imaginar que sería un viaje de por vida, tanto profesional como personal, aprendiendo sobre mí mismo y sobre el mundo a través del Agua. 

Cuanto más trabajo con el Agua, en cualquier lugar y a cualquier escala, mayor es mi admiración por ella. No deja de sorprenderme este elemento sagrado y vital, las relaciones que la gente ha desarrollado con él y su potencial para unir a las comunidades. Todos dependemos del Agua, todos pasamos nuestros días con ella, es una parte central y vital de nuestra existencia como especie, y sin embargo sigo encontrando nuevas formas de mirarla, de relacionarme con ella. No me canso de contemplar su misterio, su omnipresencia, su interconexión con todo lo que somos y hacemos.

Estamos bebiendo el mismo Agua que bebían nuestros abuelos/as, nuestros bisabuelos/as, nuestros tatarabuelos/as, e incluso los dinosaurios.  Aún no sabemos cómo hemos llegado a tener Agua en este planeta, pero la damos por sentada, la contaminamos, la malgastamos, la escondemos.  Seguimos oyendo que en el futuro las guerras serán por el Agua, yo creo que es justo lo contrario.  El Agua puede ser el elemento que haga que las comunidades trabajen juntas porque no sigue ideologías, fronteras políticas ni sistemas económicos. El Agua sólo sigue su ciclo infinito y seguirá haciéndolo mucho después de que todos nosotros/as hayamos desaparecido. 

Cuando empecé mi carrera en el sector del Agua nunca hubiera imaginado que viviríamos tiempos como los actuales.  Muchos lugares de la Tierra están atravesando crisis del Agua de distinta naturaleza, la situación es calamitosa para millones de personas, y es probable que empeore. No me alegro por ello ni veo esto como una oportunidad de negocio. No fue el dinero lo que me llevó a trabajar en el Agua, ese nunca ha sido el objetivo. Trabajo con el Agua porque cada proyecto me permite conocerme mejor, reconectar con el mundo vivo a través de un ángulo siempre cambiante y experimentar la alegría de conocer a muchas almas hermosas. Ojalá pudiera encontrar palabras para describir lo que siento en mi interior cada vez que interactúo con el Agua, ya sea a nivel sensorial, intelectual o espiritual.  Pero independientemente de eso, las palabras no significarían nada para ti porque todo se trata de la relación que cada uno de nosotros/as desarrolla con este elemento, tu propia relación. Y si puedo pedir algún resquicio de esperanza a la situación actual, me gustaría que todos/as pudiéramos reestablecer nuestra relación con el Agua y, por tanto, con este planeta azul. Os puedo asegurar que os cambiará, que lo cambiará todo.

Water

I cannot believe it took me 59 issues and over 3 years to write about one of my favourite topics, Water. I was invited to a panel discussion in Ottawa yesterday so I thought I would take the opportunity to talk about it here too. Where to start? From my early days as a civil engineering student, Water was the only topic that really interested me. I saw my classmates getting excited with bridges, roads, airports, railways… But for me it was Water. I recall taking walks by the river in my hometown thinking about what I had just learned in class. Little I know this would be a lifelong journey, both professional and personal, learning about myself and the world through Water. 

The more I work with Water, anywhere and at any scale, the bigger my admiration for it. I keep being amazed by this sacred vital element, the relationships people have developed with it and its potential to bring communities together. We all depend on Water, we all spend our days with it, it is a central and vital part of our existence as species, yet I keep finding new ways to look at it, to relate to it. I cannot get enough of its mystery, its omnipresence, its interconnectedness with everything we are and do.

We are drinking the same Water our grandparents, our great grandparents, our great great grandparents, and even the dinosaurs, did.  We do not even know yet how we ended up with Water in this planet, yet we take it for granted, we pollute it, we waste it, we hide it.  We keep hearing that in the future wars will be about Water, I just think the opposite is true.  Water can be the element that will make communities work together because it does not follow any ideologies, political boundaries or economics. Water only follows its infinite cycle and will continue doing so well beyond all of us are gone.  

When I started my career in Water, I could have never imagined that we would be living times like the present.  Many places on Earth are going through Water crises of different nature, the situation is dire for millions of people, and it will likely get worse. I am not happy about it neither I see this as a business opportunity. It was not the money that got me to work in Water, that has never been the point. I work with Water because every project allows me to know myself better, reconnect with the living world through an ever-shifting angle and experience the joy of meeting many beautiful souls. I wish I could find words to describe what I feel inside every time I interact with Water, either at a sensorial, intellectual or spiritual level.  But regardless, words will not mean anything to you because it is all about the relationship that each of us develop with this element, your own relationship. And if I can ask for any silver linings from the current situation, I wish we all could reset our relationship with water, and therefore, with this blue planet. I can assure you it will change you, it will change everything.
