Aburrocracia

Luces blancas de fluorescente, banderas polvorientas, mesas de contrachapado oscuro, sillas metálicas, mostradores de mármol falso, oficiales de uniforme, ordenadores amarillentos, botes de gel desinfectante goteando, impresoras de 1990, cubículos vacíos, carteles de prohibido el uso del teléfono móvil. Las horas pasan, es lo único que pasa. Un niño corre mientras la madre desespera. Intercambio de papeles. Se imprimen papeles para confirmar que has entregado papeles. Se imprimen papeles para firmar y confirmar que han recibido papeles. Otra fila, otra hora. El niño de deja de cantar y pide comida. La fila sigue alargándose, las cabezas desaparecen tras el mostrador. El tiempo se detiene. La gente se desespera, se resigna. Se acerca mi turno. La persona anterior a la persona anterior a mi realiza su trámite en 10 minutos. Corrección, no realiza el trámite. Vuelva usted mañana. Firmó con bolígrafo negro y debería ser azul. Me entra el miedo. Tras 3 horas de espera, ¿me faltará algún documento? ¿habré olvidado alguna forma?

Aparece una cabeza tras el mostrador, desaparecen dos.  Los veo salir a almorzar por un lado, contentos, satisfechos por el trabajo bien hecho. El niño ahora duerme en su carro, la mamá espera. Avanza la fila, una más y me toca. Siento el sudor bajando por mi espalda, mi corazón palpita con fuerza. Analizo las dos cabezas tras el mostrador. ¿Quién me tocará? ¿Tendrá un buen día? ¿Le caeré bien? Ojalá me toque la mujer, se ve más amigable. Admisiones, pase el siguiente. Mi turno, exactamente 5 horas después de haber entrado. Me toca el señor, el único que corre por la oficina de camino a la fotocopiadora. Tanta diligencia me pone nervioso. ¿Será empleado del mes? ¿Buscará la excelencia en el servicio público? ¿Qué opinará de que la inteligencia artificial pueda robar empleos?

Saludo con el máximo respeto, mi mejor sonrisa. Respiro profundamente, estoy presente, centrado. El funcionario recoge mis papeles. Los analiza, los revisa, me pregunta, sale corriendo a la impresora, regresa, me hace firmar tres documentos distintos, entrega recibos de pago. Desaparece. Todo fluye. La vida puede ser maravillosa. Todo va a salir bien. El funcionario regresa. Observo que sólo corre a la ida, la vuelta es pausada y reflexiva. Su misma cara de siempre, atemporal, sedimentaria, acartonada. Queda recibido su trámite. Desafortunadamente, es demasiado tarde para concluirlo. Tendrá que esperar a recibir la resolución en su correo electrónico. Con esa resolución tendrá que volver y terminarlo. Me dijeron que lo podría hacer en un solo día. Sí, pero en este caso tiene que esperar a la resolución. Unos 20 días hábiles. ¿Hábiles? No he visto mucha habilidad desde que entré a la oficina.

Me vuelvo a casa. Disgustado, agotado, cabreado, derrotado. La radio habla del último informe sobre cambio climático y la ventana de acción que se va cerrando. Pienso en el funcionario que va corriendo a la impresora. Me pregunto si lo hace para que le sirva como ejercicio físico. Me tumbo en la cama. Estoy frito, mi día se fue a la basura. Abro youtube y veo una entrevista a Yuval Noah Harari. Si consiguiéramos soportar el aburrimiento, no hacer nada por unas horas, podríamos derrocar auténticos imperios. Yo ya hice mi parte.

Borecracy

Fluorescent tube light, dusty flags, dark plywood tables, metallic chairs, fake marble tables, officials in uniforms, yellowish computers, bottles of disinfectant slowly dripping, printers from 1990, empty cubicles, signs of prohibited the use of cellphones.  Hours pass by, it is actually the only thing that passes by. A kid runs while his mother despairs. Paper exchange. Papers are printed to confirm that papers have been handed. Papers are printed to sign and confirm that papers have been received. Another line, another hour. The kid stopped singing and asks for food. The line keeps growing, heads disappear behind the front desk. Time freezes. People lose hope, give up. My turn is coming up. The person ahead of the person ahead of me completes his procedure within 10 minutes. Correction, he does not complete it. Come back tomorrow. He signed with a black pen and it should be blue. I start to panic. After 3 hours waiting, did I forget any documents? Did I miss any paperwork?

A head pops up behind the desk, two heads disappear. I see them leaving for lunch, happy, satisfied with the work well done. The kid now sleeps on his carriage, the mother keeps waiting. The line moves forward, one more person and my turn. I feel sweat going down my back, my heart pumps strongly. I asses the two heads behind the desk. Who will I deal with? Would they have a good day? Would I make a good impression? I hope it is the woman, she seems more friendly. Admissions, next. My turn, exactly 5 hours after entering this building. The man, it is. The only person who runs across the office to reach the printer. Such commitment makes me nervous. Is he the employee of the month? Is he looking to achieve excellence in public service? What does he think about AI taking our jobs?

I say hi with utmost respect, my best smile. I take a deep breath, I am present, grounded. The public servant takes my papers. He assesses them, reviews them, asks me, runs towards the printer, comes back, makes me sign three different documents, hands me receipts. He disappears. Everything flows. Life can be wonderful. Everything is going to be alright. The officer comes back. I notice he only runs on his way to the printer, his way back is slow and deliberate, reflective. His face stays the same, timeless, sedimentary, bland. Your submission has been received. Unfortunately, it is too late to finish it. You must wait for a resolution via email.
